Intolerance by Lawrence Wright When a dozen cartoons satirizing the Prophet Mohammed appeared in the conservative Danish daily Jyllands-Posten, in September, 2005, there was only a muted outcry from the small Danish Muslim community, and little reaction in the rest of the Muslim world. Six months later, however, riots broke out and Danish embassies were [...]

Zahrain vs Jahabar or Malaysian Insider?

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 12:31 PM PDT

It's far from over. The war between Zahrain Hashim and the Malaysian Insider CEO Jahabar Sadiq rages on. Rather than solving it in a gentlemen manner, both chose going for the arbitrator. While Jahabar lodged a police report to deny the YB accusation, Zahrain went a step ahead by demanding the government to close the news portal.

Wow! Was Zahrain against Jahabar or the Malaysian Insider. After all, he only accused Jahabar of associating himself with Indon's Bendera, an opposition-cum-opportunist group that staged anti-Malaysia demonstrations at our embassy in Jakarta recently.

Just a question to Zahrain (whom I knew when I was a bureau chief in Penang during the early 90s) - Jahabar of Malaysian Insider?

If there is a case against Jahabar, then take on Jahabar alone. There is no need asking the government to close down the news portal. I have not read anything Bendera-linked article in the Insider ever since the Malaysia-Indonesia friction erupted.

I am not taking side here but for Zahrain to make such a serious allegation, he must have tangible evidence of support.

Another thing, Zahrain can make a better Home Minister than Hisham. I believe a lot of blogs, news portals and a few newspapers would be closed down...

KISAH BENAR 3: Menemui anda di Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 10:16 AM PDT

Already Two Years Old and Counting

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 09:10 AM PDT

Two years ago, I began my blog without really thinking of where it would lead me.  I don't really know why but having a blog made me look harder and deeper at everything that was happening in my life.

I began to scrutinise and analyse what people said.  I watched TV and listened to the radio as if it was a homework assignment.  I scoured other blogs and online news portals to see what others were saying and thinking.  Always at the back of my mind, unconsciously or subconsciously, I thought of my blog and wondered, "to blog or not to blog".

As luck would have it, less than a month from the birth of my blog, I found a "cause" I believed in.  My involvement in the anti-I.S.A. vigils that followed, gave me a weekly topic to promote and to write about.  It helped build up my confidence when people responded and commented.

I had other bloggers guiding me, helping me, nudging me along the way.  Without their advice and support, I know it would have been more difficult so I really am glad that they shared their knowledge so unselfishly.

Today I celebrate 730 days in existence and just over 150 blog posts.  It's a drop in the ocean if I compare with others who have been blogging since before blogging became fashionable.  It's a tiny scratch on the surface if I look at the top bloggers who have hits in the millions.  So I don't do that.

I look at my blog and don't compare with anyone.  I don't compete either.  I feel proud that my stats are what I believe to be reasonably high.  I'm a blogger.  There have been times that people have stopped me in public to say, "Hey, I know you, you're a blogger, I read your blog".  At the beginning, I used to feel embarrassed but not anymore.  I am a blogger and I say that with pride.

As STEEST reaches two years, I look back and I can tell you that the highlights have not been that some posts were featured on Malaysia Today or that I'm listed under "Fabulous Blogs" or even that Global Voices invited me to write for them.

The highlights are the friendships I've made.

If I hadn't started blogging, I'd never have found the warmth and kinship of other bloggers.  I'd have missed knowing the camaraderie of a "friend" or that of "a friend of a friend".  Who would have guessed that great friendships could blossom from the least likely places?

I think when we write, we share a part of ourselves.  In some small way, it is a window to our soul.

To those of you who have peeped through the window, reached out and touched my life during these last two years, in one way or another, I just want to say

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Nik Aziz Ugut Rakyat Sarawak,Matlamat Menghalalkan Cara

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Kenyataan terbaru wali selipar pujaan khawarij PAS Nik Aziz mengenai pilihanraya Sarawak jelas sekali mengugut dan cuba memainkan persepsi yang jahat jika pakatan rakyat kalah.
Mursyidul Am PAS, Tuan Guru Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat berkata, PR bukan sahaja mampu menguasai Sarawak sahaja, sebaliknya seluruh Semenanjung sekiranya negara benar-benar mengamalkan prinsip demokrasi.

Pisau kata " demokasi terpimpin kepala hotak hang"

Federal Territories to sing a new tune

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 05:04 AM PDT

Source: http://thestar.com.my/metro (By BAVANI M, 17/9/2010)
WORD is out that the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry is going to replace the anthem of the three Federal Territories — Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan before the next Federal Territories Day celebration on Feb 1. A source told StarMetro that the Cabinet had given the go ahead to change the FT song - Maju dan Sejahtera (Progressive and Peaceful) after it was gazetted and launched by the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail at Dataran Merdeka on Aug 20, 2006. Since then, government agencies and schools in the Federal Territories have been honouring the song at official events. It is also sung at school assemblies on Monday morning. The anthem together with the flag was created to infuse a new spirit and provide a sense of identity for the Federal Territories. It is also meant to provide KL-ites with a sense of belonging and a feeling of pride for their home.

Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abdin confirmed the Cabinet's decision to change the song. In a text message to StarMetro, Raja Nong Chik said the FT song would be changed by the next Federal Territories Day as decided by the Cabinet. "The lyrics will be in line with the 1Malaysia concept and more upbeat as the present anthem is too slow," he said.

Labuan MP Datuk Yussof Mahal also agreed that the current song was too slow. "It does not raise the spirit of the Federal Territories. We need something more up-beat that is suitable for the current generation,'' he said.

The move, however, has drawn flak from Opposition leaders who are questioning the rationale and reasoning for changing the song.

"The FT anthem is a respected emblem of the city and should reflect the values of a city. If its lyrics no longer reflect that values then by all means make the changes otherwise why change it,'' said Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng. Lim added that the FT song was not a fashion statement that could be changed as and when the need arose.

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar expressed shock when she heard about the song change.

"What ever for? The song holds a special meaning for the people of KL. It inculcates a sense of belonging with the residents and gives them something to be proud of,'' she said. "This is also disrespectful to the previous Agong and it speaks volumes on how Kuala Lumpur and its residents are being treated,'' Nurul Izzah added. Batu MP Tian Chua said: "One should not play around with something as respected as the anthem or the flag. "I find this news appalling,'' Chua said. Kepong MP Dr Tan Seng Giaw said any changes to the FT song must get feedback from the people of the Federal Territories. "Have they sought their views on this? Tan asked. "If the lyrics are not meaningful or the music not nice, then get the people to provide feedback on it. Why the hurry to change,'' Tan asked.

Teacher Sulaiman Yaaob said the song Maju dan Sejahtera held a deep meaning for him as it had been sung in his school in Keramat for the past four years. "It provided us with a deep sense of belonging and I do not think it is a good idea to change it now after four years,'' he said. Student Tan Hui Ling of SMK Sri Sinar in Segambut said they had already learnt the song by heart and it would be a hassle to learn a new one. "Maybe the authorities can change the beat or tempo like what they did with the Negaraku,'' she said.

The FT anthem was composed by Datuk Wah Idris, the man behind the current version of the Negaraku and Commonwealth Games 1998 theme song Standing in the Eyes of the World. The song's lyrics written by Sheikh Faisal Mansor projects the hope and aspiration of the people. It was first used by the Federal Territories contingent at Sukma XI in Kedah in 2006. When contacted, Wah Idris said the FT anthem was a respected element that should not be changed every two to three years. "Everyone is entitled to their views but one should not make changes especially when it concerns national anthems. "If they feel that the song is too slow then they should come back to me and changes can be made. "Careful thought was given to the FT anthem and the melody and the tune should be maintained,'' Wah Idris said.

New traffic lights causing congestion

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 04:59 AM PDT

Source: http://thestar.com.my/metro (6/9/2010)

A new traffic lights system in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur, is causing frustration among motorists as it is the cause of congestion in the area. The traffic lights at the Jalan Segambut Pusat and Jalan Segambut Tengah junction is causing a backlog of vehicles all the way to the Duta roundabout since it started operating on Sept 2.

Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said the traffic lights were installed by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) three months ago without consulting the residents. He added that last week during the testing of the traffic lights, there was a huge backlog spilling into Jalan Duta from Jalan Segambut Pusat and Jalan Segambut. "Despite that, the traffic lights became functional this week and there are many unhappy people here because it takes more time to get to their destinations," he said during a press conference on Friday. He said he would bring the matter to Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail's attention.

Businessman Liew Way Mun, who operates an auto parts shop in Jalan Segambut Selatan, said it now took him 45 minutes to get to his shop from Jalan Segambut when previously it took less than 10 minutes before the traffic lights started operating. "There is also a problem getting back to Jalan Segambut from my office. Last time it took me only three minutes but now I am stuck for almost half an hour," he said.

Another businessman said the traffic lights were not solving any traffic problems but only causing more frustration among motorists. "Before it was operational we did not think it would be a problem but now I must say it is madness. DBKL should have conducted a proper traffic study before deciding on this," he said.

Christopher Ong, 52, who lives in Taman Segambut Hilir said the traffic lights was a good idea because it was much easier for him to get out of Jalan Segambut Tengah to Jalan Segambut Pusat. "It is difficult to get out of Jalan Segambut Tengah without the traffic lights. Sometimes it took me 10 minutes just to leave the junction because motorists in Jalan Segambut Pusat would not give us a chance to turn out," he said.

Tired of litigation

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 11:19 PM PDT

People are fond of saying, 'You can always sue him for that...', in connection with any serious complaint about someone, or an outstanding debt. Don't count on taking someone to court unless you are aware of the delay expected and the time it will take from commencement to conclusion.

Many people tend to assume that everything is very clearcut, like taking security in a condominium or a gated housing area, for granted.

When we wanted to evict some long term, but monthly tenants, on temporary premises, the first hearing date fixed was one year ahead! From magistrate court to High Court, then to the then Supreme Court, it took five years! Then with a decision in our favour, it took another three years to collect judgment debts, with the end result of bankruptcies proclaimed on eight former tenants and a write-off of almost Rm500,000 in judgment debts. The long drawn process took a heavy toll on me, in terms of disappointment in human relationships and especially empty promises; as well as questioning whether it is worthwhile pursuing anything based on principles and rights, or better to always compromise to get things done instead.
My in-laws too, had their fair share of litigation, involving specific performance of a sale and purchase agreement relating to a land purchase in Kedah. The case went even to the Privy Council in Britain! My sister-in-law, being a lawyer in a big firm, was gungho about it then. My wife looked after the oil palm estate for 26 years and she is quite emotional at the thought of it being history, now that it is awaiting completion of sale.

My brother-in-law (sister's husband, not to be confused with wife's brother) bought a house at an auction in KL, and it took several years to get vacant possession because the owner was aggrieved over the low price. In the process, the lady lawyer got scolded by him, even though we knew she was not at fault, but the inefficient system in the judiciary.

Now, I am quite amused whenever I come across people promising to take someone to court! I am sure the lawyers are more than amused, and thinking aloud, 'Thank God for these quarrelsome folks!'
