| Geneticist clarifies role of Proto-Malays in human origin Posted: 25 Jan 2012 01:30 PM PST Most recently, strong reaction had arisen over media coverage of a conference on the origins of the Malay race, which marked the Orang Asli - the Senoi, Semang and the Proto-Malays - as torchbearers of the modern human race. NONEClarifying this finding in an interview last week, Oppenheimer said the Orang Asli, particularly the Semang and the Proto-Malays are direct descendants of the first humans who stepped foot in South-East Asia (then Sunda), and are "ancestral" for east Asia and the Americas.-mkini Pisau kata "Chong Eng Ahli Parlimen DAP Bukit Mertajam kata Bangsa Melayu Pendatang!" |
| Posted: 25 Jan 2012 10:56 AM PST The Christians bear the brunt of it again. It was recently 'revealed' by a state exco that the state's religious department has in their possession 'talking bibles' purportedly used for proselytizing to Muslims. This was the follow up to his earlier claims that the Christians are using solar-powered talking bibles to try and covert the Muslim ummah to embrace the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This latest incredulous claim is part of a larger narrative; that there is a 'Christianisation' movement to try to convert the whole country and turn it into a 'Christian state'. So convinced are they of the Christian threat to the faith of Muslims that a number of Malay-Muslim NGOs have formed a coalition in order to 'save' the faith of Muslims from this Christianisation wave. At the time of writing, the coalition has garnered some 12,000 or so 'likes' on Facebook. Which is rather ironic, as the very same coalition charged that Facebook exposes young Muslims to apostasy. In the middle of last year, a blogger claimed that there were moves by the Christian community to install a Christian prime minister and to amend the Constitution to make Christianity as the official religion of the Federation. The incredulous claim was picked up by a Malay-language newspaper who carried it as if it is the gospel truth. Yet to date, neither blogger nor newspaper has provided proof of their assertions. That very same Malay-language newspaper has also alleged that the Bersih 2.0 coalition is being funded by Christian groups overseas. The objective? Purportedly a change of government through street protests. We also saw last year how a state religious authority raided a church in Damansara for allegedly attempting to convert Muslims. Not forgetting the constant threats the Christians pose to the faithful through things like Valentine's Day, Santa Claus and Christmas greetings. Some even go so far as to 'read' symbols of Freemasonary and Illuminati into mundane things and linking them to them to Christianity. On top of being constantly demonised, Christians also have to contend with impediments to their constitutional right to profess and practice their religion. Some want to regulate and dictate what are the names they can call their God. Their holy books have been confiscated and defaced. They struggle just to obtain permission to build their houses of worships. Then, some of these places of worship are themselves torched. Even the relatively harmless activity of Christmas caroling now requires a police permit. In short, it would appear that everything that is wrong in this country is directly or indirectly the fault of Christians. Christians, to them, are like a plague upon the nation, one that must be confronted and combated before it becomes a bigger menace. I could never understand this paranoia. Perhaps, it is because I have lived my whole life surrounded by Christians and Christianity. My alma mater, a school in Petaling Jaya, was founded by missionaries. Walk around its halls and you will many vestiges of the missionary school of yore. I spent years walking around in its compound under the shadow of a very noticeable cross. Once, a couple of parents wanted to remove the cross, but the objections from everyone else meant that the idea remained an idea. I was never tempted or wondered about switching school. Some of my closest friends are Christians. Yet never have I once been proselytised by them. They have not even questioned the faith I have in my faith, even if religion is far from being a taboo subject to us. Surely if there was indeed a movement, why have they not tried to convert me? My involvement with the MyConstitution campaign also meant that I had to visit a lot of churches for events and workshops. We would be treated with wonderful hospitality, but I have never been asked to leave my faith. It saddens me when these allegations are banded about my fellow Malaysians in the name of my religion. When I know of so many Christians who are so passionate about their country, who are contributing their blood, sweat and tears to make a better Malaysia, yet treated as if they are high level national security threats. It is heartening to note that Christians of Malaysia have reacted with calm, turning their collective cheeks and still loving their neighbours. I believe a lot of the paranoia and demonisation of Christians are due to ignorance. For some reason, these people see Christians as a homogenous and singular community. That is why they buy into the idea of a Christian conspiracy. Yet to see Christians as one entity betrays their lack of knowledge in the history of the religion we know of as Christianity. That is why a Protestant church was firebombed when the challenge in Court to use the name 'Allah' was brought by Catholics. They know not of the difference. Prejudice and paranoia are difficult to eradicate. Even more difficult when you are constantly bombarded with propaganda. Yet it must be done, for what other choice do we have? After all, is it not true that God help those who help themselves? *first published in The Star iPad application on 12 January 2012 Filed under: Religion |
| Tua Pek Kong temple at Pasir Panjang, near Sitiawan Posted: 25 Jan 2012 09:33 AM PST I first heard about this tourist attraction when in a Pusing coffeeshop. I was told there are organized tours from Pusing which include lunch. Fellow retirees decided to make a trip by car which I did not join in. But I had a look at the brochure and have a rough idea how to get there. Today, wife said, 'Why not make a trip to the temple and see what it's like?' At the KFC junction in Sitiawan, we turned left towards Kg. Koh, a place which we used to go to for seafood meals. Past Kg. Koh, I looked for Jalan Pasir Panjang on the right, which was well sign-posted. We also saw a sign to Kuan Yin temple which reassured us that we were on the right track. We could see many cars going in as well as coming out, presumably from the temple. Though there was a kenduri nearby, most cars were indeed heading there. We decided to park near a field next to a building under construction, well away from it to avoid getting caught in the traffic jam. It was a long walk and there were hundreds of cars parked all the way there! There were more cars in the car park within the compound next to the sea. I was actually bothered by the idea that the locals, especially the Malay residents, might complain about frequent traffic jams, especially during public holidays. I found it amazing that a temple with some granite statues and basic landscaping could attract such a large crowd. But among the visitors, most are devotees who actually prayed, which explained it. There was a section which is named 'Taman Monyet' or Monkey Garden, but the Chinese translation was actually Fruits Garden! It is a man-made concrete pathway crudely constructed without any consideration for conservation of the mangrove trees, as evidenced from the dead trees on both sides. Rubbish thrown by inconsiderate visitors could be seen floating in the water. No monkeys nor fruit trees could be found, which wasn't surprising. I searched the internet and found the following report which helps me in explaining... NST: The gods must be happy at Tua Pek Kong http://www.nst.com.my/streets/northern/the-gods-must-be-happy-at-tua-pek-kong-1.9931 Even with my limited knowledge, I think I can explain or find fault (in italics) in the following excerpt from that article: "Taking centre stage is the gigantic Da Bo Gong (Tua Pek Kong) statue, along with statues of Jiu Tian Xuan Nu, Yu Nu, Guan Yin Niang Niang, Jin Tong, Wu Guan, Wen Guan, Qian Li Yan, Ma Zu, Shun Feng Er and Hu Ye. Below these statues, on the cement courtyard, are 24 smaller statues of various Chinese demigods who are said to have mystical powers. (These are actually known in Cantonese as 'yee sup sei hau' or 24 examples of filial piety; as a kid, I used to see them in calendars sponsored by a paint company, and the most memorable example was that of a mother allowing her aged and poorly father-in-law to suckle her milk, at the expense of her baby!) Outside the courtyard are statues of a monkey, pig, horseman, and a man with a staff of demigods. At the right side of the main temple are nine statues lining the sides of the garden path leading to three man-made caves containing three small deities." (There are actually 18 statues, representing the 18 Immortals (btw, not the gang by that name!). |
| Posted: 25 Jan 2012 09:12 AM PST The latest on the road to PRU13 is the (non) issue of some Malays turning "traitors" by joining DAP. Quite a number of bloggers have taken up this (non) issue, some UMNO politicians have asked DAP to "reveal" how many Malays there are in DAP. One fact is not disputed – that DAP is a legally registered political party and is in fact the government of Pulau Pinang. Let me try to understand this |

| SRJK (C) is not for Chinese only! Posted: 24 Jan 2012 08:39 PM PST "I wanted to enroll my 7-year old daughter at a Sekolah Rendah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) in Ampang. I went to see the headmaster but upon seeing that my daughter wore a 'tudung', he asked me to send her to a Sekolah Kebangsaan."He said there is no place for a Malay student in a Chinese school, especially those with 'tudung'," he said, anguish and frustrated. "He also said that Chinese schools are supposed to be for Chinese only." I am checking on the allegation. However, the public general perception has always been stereotype - that whenever a non-Chinese pupil enrolls at any SRJK(C), his or her intention is to take up Mandarin and acquire Chinese knowledge. This is actually wrong, totally not right. All Sekolah Kebangsaan, SRJK (Cina) and SRJK (Tamil) are government-aided schools. It belongs to the government, right? So, while all Sekolah Kebangsaan accepts non-Malay students, the Malays too deserve all rights to enroll at any SRJK(C) and SRJK(T), am I'm not right? These are all government schools. But why must there still be abrasive remarks about the system? I don't want to call the headmaster 'a racist' for his attitude but it reflects more on the government's hands-on policy on non-Sekolah Kebangsaan matters. The Education Ministry, I believe, only ensures that the schools are under good management and with ample facilities but it fails to monitor the type of teachers being deployed. Whether its a Sekolah Kebangsaan, SRJK(C) or SRJK(T), the teachers, especially headmasters must be tuned to the fact that they are on the government's payroll. Most important is, the schools are open to all Malaysians, not for a single race. And I am also of the opinion that the 'Satu Sekolah Untuk Semua' will be most practical to address such a situation. |

This poor tree has a history of abuse by this uncouth person.A few years ago, we found the plant missing! Later it was found near the junction, in front of the Indian temple multi-purpose hall. I took it back and planted at the same spot. With recent happenings, I am now suspecting he was the culprit when it went missing! So far, the plant had been subjected to weedkillers twice on separate occasions, which showed after a few days with dried leaves... Now, he went a step further with cutting down the plant. Our patience and refrain from acting tit-for-tat has been taken as being weak I suppose. But I am taking the following advice... |
| Posted: 24 Jan 2012 07:39 PM PST Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) is genuinely aimed at helping the rakyat coping themselves against the increasing cost of living. This is a one-off payment to those whose income is below RM3,000. It is not a complusion for the rakyat to receive this payment, meaning they can choose to accept or to reject it. In short, youe either take it or leave it. Simply its a good gesture of The Government to its rakyat and many have been grateful of the gift, especially those who felt the pinch in their pocket. There have been efforts to circumvent the regulations just to get their hands on the payment. However, if certain rakyat want to refuse the payment, they are welcomed to do so, again, there is no compulsion. And if they have accepted the payment but then suddenly have a change of heart then all they can do is volunteer the RM500 to charity and to whom they felt so deserving. But to badmouth The Government over the gift is simply outrageous! That is not cool la brader! |
